The Sherlock Holmes Suite

Early summer 1905: It had been a trying week at the Conservatory. Much of it was spent grading exams and fretting over my own, since I was both a professor-in-training and a music student at the same time. But the arrival of a first-class train ticket in the mail was an auspicious omen, and I kept clutching my invitation like a love note. When I looked up the Poincare family name I was surprised that my ladyship and benefactress omitted her aristocratic title. Perhaps she wanted to spare me the shock. Their estate was an hour and a half outside of Munich. I tried to relax during the long ride, but couldn’t.

Throughout my stay in Germany, I’d faithfully conduct my midnight conversations with Arthur Conan Doyle. This was our secret code name for our clairvoyant and telepathic sessions that we performed per diem for several years. Following up with the postal service was always recommended, so to pass the time I composed a long overdue letter.

Dear Arthur,

I’m writing you as I’m gleefully passing the time riding the train from the Conservatory to the Bavarian countryside. Since it’s been impossible to dismiss the fact that I’ve been ghostwriting all of those Sherlock Holmes stories for the past few years, I’ve been inspired to take those thoughts one-step further. I was bursting with ideas about a composition called the Sherlock Holmes Suite where I could actually translate the adventures of the great detective into music. A clarinet would signify Sherlock, accompanied by an oboe, and a French horn would represent Watson. The string section would represent Lestrade and the others at Scotland Yard will be bassoons with tubas. The criminal under the suspicion would be portrayed by the piano, created especially so I could play it. A flute would play the nervous wife of the victim, and the victim would be a base and cello with a second piano accompaniment, but also booming percussion. Snare drums would represent a shifty suspect. What do you think? After all, others have taken dramatis personae and created musical scores. If you’re still writing for the stage with J. M. Barrie this can be a fresh concept.

Unfortunately in the realm of courtship, I’ve failed to make significant strides. It’s not like I haven’t put forth a sincere effort, but luck does not like to bless me with suitable or available prospects. This past winter, I had met a young woman named Lenora. Mutual friends introduced us after she performed at a recital since I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for a well-trained soprano. In turn, she was equally smitten by my musical acumen. We had a brief long-distance courtship, although I knew it would never end in marriage.

She kept her affairs secretive at first, only telling me that she worked as a nurse and was not a professional songstress. I was willing to accept that, as she was utterly charming, but after a few engagements I discovered that this mysterious
